DEMING – Celebrating salsa in New Mexico borders on a ritual plain. Deming MainStreet Program is prepared to address this ritual by inviting the public to an extended three-day Salsa Festival, July 29-31.
DMS Executive Director Chelsea Evans has lined up entertainment for the weekend that will sandwich the traditional Saturday Salsa Festival at Luna County Courthouse Park.
“We plan on having our traditional Saturday events at the park. They will include the chile cookoff contest, salsa tasting, watermelon and jalapeno eating contests, and vendors.
Evans has added dance performances by the Southwest Fine Arts Studio, a cornhole tournament and a tortilla toss competition on Poplar Street located behind the courthouse.
Events at the Luna County Courthouse Park will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Friday evening’s live entertainment will open the three-day festival with a tribute to the music of Juan Gabriel at 7 p.m. at the Trees Lake Amphitheater on North Country Club Road.
A 15- to 20-piece Mariachi band will perform the music of one of Mexico’s most prolific singers. Gabriel died in August of 2016 but his songs and music cross generations of listeners even today.
Evans has lined up a live concert beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Southwestern New Mexico State Fairgrounds at 4300 Raymond Reed Blvd. in Deming’s Industrial Park. Fans will enjoy Fiesta Mexicana with Hermanos Escamilla and their talented equestrian riders and dancing ponies.
The evening’s entertainment will be highlighted by the live music stylings of Banda La Conquistadora and Banda La Magnifica.
Tickets are $20 per adult and $10 for children 12 and under. They can be purchased at the Deming Visitor Center at 800 E. Pine St. or online at: www.eventbrite.com. VIP tables (seats six) can be reserved for $200.
“As always, events at the courthouse park are free to the public,” Evans said.
On Sunday, July 31, the Salsa Festival weekend will wrap up with a bi-cultural IBR International rodeo at the fairgrounds. The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.
“This will be a binational event. American rodeo riders will perform in traditional events followed by the Mexican Charreada (Mexican rodeo) riders in their traditional events,” Evans said. “This should be a fun and exciting evening.”
Tickets for Sunday’s bi-cultural rodeo are $20 for adults and $10 for youth. All tickets can be purchased in advance at the Deming Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 800 E. Pine St. You can also order tickets online at: www.eventbrite.com.
“We want our community and guests to enjoy and savor the flavor of the southwest,” Evans said.
