Outstanding creatives named as 2022 MPB Young Photographer and Young Journalist of the Year
Motorsport UK is pleased to announce Dominic Gibbons as the MPB Young Photographer of the Year and Luke Barry as the Young Journalist of the Year for 2022.
Established in 2002, the awards celebrate and show many of the industry’s leading young media professionals in the fields of journalism, photography, marketing, and communications.
An independent judging panel, comprising former winners and industry-leading professionals, selected DirtFish writer Luke and freelance photographer Dominic as this year’s winners for their exceptional work in motorsport media.
Both Luke and Dominic will be honoured at Motorsport UK’s annual Night of Champions, held at the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall, in January. They will also each receive a cheque for £1,000 to help further their careers in the sport. Dominic will also receive a £1,500 MPB voucher, allowing him to purchase photographic equipment from the UK’s largest range of used kit.
MPB Young Photographer of the Year
MPB, a unique platform that has transformed the way that people buy, sell and trade in photo and video kit, has partnered with Motorsport UK to support the Award and the future of young motorsport photographers.
Dominic, aged 24 from Burton-on-Trent, has just completed another season photographing a wide range of national motorsport, including for leading agency, Jakob Ebrey Photography.
The judges were impressed with the originality and creativity in the shots that Dominic submitted, with a particular note on his use of lighting, textures, and angles.
His submission showcased a broad range of imagery, including studio shots and candid photography from around the paddock to supplement his on-track images.
On winning the MPB Young Photographer of the Year Award, Dominic said, “I am thrilled and very honoured to win the Motorsport UK MPB Young Photographer of the Year award. This has been an ambition since my time at Staffordshire University, and I am certainly looking forward to what 2023 has to offer.”
Autosport’s Megan White and freelance photographer Dominic Vincent were selected by the judges as the Highly Commended entries in each category. Motorsport UK and MPB would like to extend its thanks to all those who entered.
Sophie Collins, MPB Chief Marketing Officer, commented, “At MPB we are dedicated to opening up the world of visual storytelling by providing access to kit and opportunity. MPB is thrilled to be a partner and in particular to support the developing careers of young photographers like Dominic.”
Young Journalist of the Year
Luke, aged 25 from Edinburgh, has worked full-time in the industry for three years, recently celebrating his one-year anniversary as the Deputy Editor at leading rallying outlet DirtFish.
The judges felt that Luke’s writing demonstrated exceptional originality, with a distinctive, entertaining style, and that his submitted work showcased excellent range and a technique that, at its heart, is punchy, succinct and colourful, without compromising on content.
On being announced as the winner, Luke said, “I’m far more used to writing about winners than becoming one myself, so I’m not quite sure what to say! It really is a tremendous honour to be recognised for my work this year, and I’d like to thank all the judges for their appraisal, and Motorsport UK for this opportunity.
“Working for DirtFish and in this sport has never felt like a job to me, it’s something really special, and I take great pride in speaking to everyone involved and telling their stories.”
Hugh Chambers, Motorsport UK Chief Executive Officer, commented, “The quality of entries in the MPB Young Photographer of the Year and Young Journalist of the Year Awards increases year on year as more young media professionals carve a career in the sport. This year was no different with every entrant showcasing a superb CV and portfolio that made the independent panel’s selection process no easy task.
“Luke and Dominic demonstrated outstanding work in their respective fields, and I congratulate them on all they have achieved in their career so far.”
