DirecTV Stream and YouTube TV place at opposite ends of our ratings for the Best Live TV Streaming Services of 2022 and the Best Sports Streaming Services of 2022. YouTube TV ties for first in both lists, while DirecTV Stream sits at the bottom. Although their basic plans are comparable in terms of pricing, channel lineup, and cloud DVR capacity, DirecTV is much more expensive for its higher-tier plans and is not available on as many devices as YouTube TV. Both offer parental controls and multiple simultaneous streams, but only YouTube TV features multiple user profiles.

DirecTV Stream vs. YouTube TV

The base prices for DirecTV Stream and YouTube TV are similar, but DirecTV Stream can be substantially more expensive if you opt for higher-tier plans. Meanwhile, YouTube TV offers only a single basic plan, along with a low-cost Spanish-language plan.

DirecTV Stream starts at $69.99 per month for its basic Entertainment package with more than 75 channels, but packages can cost up to $149.99 per month if you opt for the Premier plan with about 150 channels. YouTube TV includes more than 85 channels for $64.99 per month. While it doesn’t have any higher-priced plans, it does offer premium channel add-ons that can raise the monthly cost.

Both DirecTV Stream and YouTube TV are available on a wide range of devices, both mobile and at home. DirecTV Stream is more limited in its availability, as it’s only compatible with one brand of smart TV (Samsung) and no gaming devices.

YouTube TV, on the other hand, can be streamed on multiple brands of smart TVs, including Samsung, HiSense, Vizio, and more, as well as on Xbox and PlayStation gaming consoles. Both services are compatible with Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, and Amazon Fire TV devices and you can access them on major web browsers. On mobile, both services are available for Android and iOS devices.

DirecTV Stream also promotes its own dedicated device, which is preferred (but not required) for streaming the service’s programming. It works similarly to streaming devices like Roku or Apple TV and can be used with other streaming apps, including Netflix, DirecTV Stream, and the music service Pandora.

Both DirecTV Stream and YouTube TV offer features that are common across live-TV streaming services. With both, subscribers have access to unlimited cloud DVR storage, although both will delete recordings after nine months.

For larger households, DirecTV Stream provides the option of unlimited simultaneous streams on devices within the same Wi-Fi network and three simultaneous streams on other devices. YouTube TV only allows for three simultaneous streams in total. All of the simultaneous streams on DirecTV Stream have to be from the same profile, though, since the service doesn’t offer separate user profiles, while YouTube TV offers up to six per account.

The basic plans for DirecTV Stream and YouTube TV include a similar number of channels. YouTube TV comes with about 85 channels, which is 10 more than what DirecTV Stream offers. With its higher-tier plans, DirecTV Stream offers a much greater number of channels, getting up to 150-plus channels in its Premier plan.

Both services offer premium add-ons – such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz – for additional fees. Regional sports networks (RSNs) also come with both services, although they vary by market. Additionally, both offer local channels depending on regional availability, with ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX included in most markets. YouTube TV, unlike the other live-TV services in our evaluation, provides viewers with access to PBS.

Pros:

  • Extensive channel lineup with higher-tier plans

  • Dedicated streaming device available

  • Similar experience to traditional cable

Cons:

  • Expensive monthly fee, especially with higher-tier plans

  • Unavailable on certain devices

  • Only one user profile per account

For cord-cutting customers looking to replicate the experience of traditional cable, DirecTV Stream – the live-TV streaming service of satellite TV company DirecTV – is an appealing option. It offers an interface that resembles cable TV and has its own dedicated streaming device available. DirecTV Stream includes an expansive channel lineup, with more than 75 channels in its basic Entertainment tier, and around 150 channels in its highest-level Premier tier.

Those extra channels come with a higher price, though, as DirecTV Stream is the most expensive live-TV streaming service in our ratings. Packages range between $69.99 to $149.99 per month, with premium channels available for additional fees. In a match-up with other services, DirecTV Stream places at the bottom of both our Best Live-TV Streaming Services of 2022 and Best Sports Streaming Services of 2022 ratings.
