An initially panned Bradley Cooper movie is cooking up a revival on Netflix. The 2015 film Burnt has climbed into the number six spot on the streaming service. The film follows the Guardians of the Galaxy star as Adam Jones, a professional chef navigating personal demons and a minefield of people he has turned against him with years of toxic behavior as he fights to get his career back on track following a drug addiction.

Burnt was directed by John Wells, whose extensive credits include Shameless, Animal Kingdom, ER, and The West Wing. The film was written by Steven Knight, the creator of powerhouse shows like Peaky Blinders and Apple’s See starring Jason Momoa. Bradley Cooper is joined on his quest for a Michelin Star in Burnt by an impressive ensemble cast that includes Sienna Miller, Daniel Bruhl, Uma Thurman, Emma Thompson, Alicia Vikander, Lily James, and more.

The project came into being in 2013, with John Wells as director and Bradley Cooper as the star. Originally titled Chef, the film’s name was later changed to avoid overlap with Jon Favreau’s 2014 film of the same title. Eventually, the filmmakers arrived at the title Burnt, and the film was released in October 2015.

Burnt was poorly received by critics and audiences alike. Though the movie eventually garnered $36 million against a $20 million budget, Burnt did not meet box office expectations. The flop of Burnt continued a skid for Bradley Cooper, whose hot streak in the early 2010s with Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Hangover sequels was screeching to a halt.

In the past few years, Bradley Cooper has experienced a renaissance. He had audiences singing a different tune in 2018’s A Star Is Born, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. In 2021, Cooper appeared in more award-season darlings, starring in Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza.

Of course, it can’t be forgotten that Bradley Cooper voices Rocket Raccoon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His appearances as Rocket are adding up quickly, his most recent being The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+, which has been heralded as a breath of fresh air amid declining interest in the MCU. Cooper will return as Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023.

Netflix has a funny way of offering new life to old films, even those that were not well received on their initial release. While Netflix has revived an old Bradley Cooper film with Burnt, it will also be the place to watch an upcoming one. Cooper transforms into an almost unrecognizable form for his role as famed musician Leonard Bernstein in Maestro, expected to hit Netflix in 2023.

Bradley Cooper is also scheduled for a debut collaboration with director Steven Spielberg. The pair will team up to revive Bullitt, a 1968 neo-noir film starring Steve McQueen, with Cooper as the San Francisco police detective Frank Bullitt. The untitled film is currently in pre-production.

The latest resurgence of Burnt shows that audiences are still eager to watch Bradley Cooper, and the future looks bright for this movie star and his fans.
