Barney is back with new merch, a TV series, and trimmer jawline

Maybe he’s born with it, or maybe it’s a (slimming) rebrand of the iconic dinosaur kids either love wholeheartedly or are terrified of.

Toy company Mattel announced Monday that Barney, the big purple dinosaur who was once a pop culture staple, is being completely revitalized, fit with a new, slimmer face and sharp jaw line along with a new animated series set to debut globally in 2024.

“Created for preschool kids, the series will feature the ubiquitous purple dinosaur and friends, introducing new audiences to the world of Barney through music-filled adventures centred on love, community, and encouragement,” Mattel said in a release.

The new show is only part of Barney’s makeover, however — new books, toys, clothing and music, along with YouTube content, is also in development. This time, likely without someone tucked into a sweaty, felt costume.

But fret not, adults who are nostalgic for the dinosaur burnt into their minds — welcome or not. Apparel and accessories for adult fans and featuring “classic Barney” is in the works.

“Barney’s message of love and kindness has stood the test of time,” said Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer and global head of consumer products at Mattel. “We will tap into the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves, and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation of kids and families around the world across content, products, and experiences.”
