After Navarasa release, why is Ban Netflix trending on Twitter?
On Friday (August 6), the nine-film anthology Navarasa released on Netflix at 12.30 pm. Since then, #BanNetflix has been trending on Twitter after an organisation, Raza Academy, called for strict action against the OTT platform for using a Quran verse in an advertisement for the film in a Tamil newspaper.
AFTER NAVARASA RELEASE, BAN NETFLIX TRENDS ON TWITTER
Mani Ratnam’s Navarasa released on Netflix on August 6 and has garnered mixed reviews from the audience. Soon after the Tamil film’s release, #BanNetflix has been trending on Twitter. Netizens have expressed their displeasure on the micro-blogging site for using a Quran verse in a newspaper ad for the film. The ad was in connection with one of the short films titled Inmai starring Siddharth and Parvathy in lead roles. It is directed by Rathindran R Prasad.
An organisation, Raza Academy, took to Twitter asking for strict action against the OTT platform. They wrote, “Netflix has published a verse of the Quran in the advertisement of its film NavaRasa in Daily Thanthi newspaper This is an insult to the Quran. We demand strict action against @NetflixIndia (sic).”

Jointly produced by Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesan, Netflix’s Navarasa is a nine-film anthology based on nine emotions, which includes fear, anger, compassion, romance, valour, laughter, wonder, peace and disgust. Each of the short films is directed by Rathindran Prasad, Arvind Swami, Bejoy Nambiar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Sarjun KM, Priyadarshan, Karthick Naren, Karthik Subbaraj and Vasanth. The film features an ensemble cast with Suriya, Pragya Martin, Delhi Ganesh, Rohini, Aditi Balan, Karthick Krisna, Yogi Babu, Ramya Nambeesan, Vijay Sethupathi, Revathy, Ashok Selvan, Bobby Simhaa, Gautham Menon, Rythvika, Arvind Swami, Prasanna, Siddharth, Parvathy, Atharvaa, Anjali and Kishore playing pivotal roles. The proceeds from the project will help thousands of film technicians affected during the Covid-19 pandemic.
